We bring to you poignant stories from the field narrated by the farmers & field staff themselves.
We as KisanMitra have been working in 3 districts (Adilabad, Mancherial, Vikarabad) of Telangana with the District Administration for the past 1.5 years to alleviate Rural Distress and thereby Preventing Suicides. However we definitely need a lot more innovative ideas and enthusiastic people to join us in this journey towards realising our goal of “No Farmer Suicides”.
On the occasion of “World Suicide Prevention Day” we invite you to come join us in a discussion to explore options and share ideas on how we can together make this goal of “No Farmer Suicides” a reality.

Remembering Operation Polo
Sun Sep 16, 7:30 PM
Yunus Lasania & Lamakaan Programming Council
On September 17, 1948, the Indian army which was sent by the government had taken over the princely state of Hyderabad. Titled 'Operation Polo' and known as 'Police Action', the event annexed areas of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka, which were then under Hyderabad, to the Indian union.

The operation was initiated after Osman Ali Khan, the last and seventh monarch of the Asaf Jahi dynasty was deliberating between joining the Indian union and staying independent.

Anything but a simple takeover, Operation Polo had resulted in thousands of deaths, apparently at the hands of the Indian army (preceded by bouts of violence against citizens by the militia Razakaars run by Kasim Razvi, who later became the leader of the MIM). September 17 this year marks 70 years since the incident took place.

Mr. Burugula Narsing Rao (86) , then a college student, and someone who witnessed the murder of journalist Shoaibullah Khan (by the Razakaars) and what had transpired during the period will be speaking at Lamakaan on the occasion. So come join us for a discussion.

Conscious Fashion
Wed Sep 19, 5:00 PM
Namrata Manot
The dyeing part of the process is a major culprit where maximum harmful chemicals are used. Hence the need to appreciate and apply natural dyes on fabrics is a sustainable solution in the long run. Natural dyeing would cause no air, water or soil pollution and no harm to human skin if the herbs and minerals used in dyeing are ayurvedic and non toxic.

Many eco friendly companies and organisations claim they use LOW IMPACT DYES, but they do affect the environment and the human body. We need to adopt a no-impact dyeing because we are trying to maintain the natural life cycle

we would have a deep conversation on sustainability in dyes, organic clothing, and natural dyeing as a solution. I have been working on conscious fashion, natural dyed clothing and cretaing awareness on natural dyes for past 4 years and done several local and residential workshops in other locations.

Topic: Understanding Electoral Rolls and Voter Registration

The Election Commission of India has launched the National Electoral Rolls Purification and Authentication Programme in 2015 to streamline electoral rolls by detecting anomalies. Further, the commission has been working with various state governments to improve the voter lists. With the Telangana elections being held in the upcoming months, the commission has announced a special summary revision of the electoral rolls. At the national level, there are petitions in the Supreme Court demanding the election commission to publish electoral data in text formats instead of scanned pdf.

The elections to the Telangana Assembly are due in the next few months. The Election Commission of India is also in the process of finalising the electoral roll for these elections.

The session will discuss this entire process and help people understand what an electoral roll means, how to get enrolled or get anomalies corrected if your name does not figure in the roll.

The discussants are:
1. Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu: Rakesh has been working on issues related to Right to Information (RTI) for a decade. He is a Data/Information enthusiast & passionate about Governance/Policy issues.

Astraea’s program works with diverse sexualities in India. It is to deepen capacity building and “accompaniment” support to grantee partners over the course of this year. Akshay Khanna is engaged to develop this program to coordinate responsive capacity building opportunities and support Astraea in documenting the impact of grant making as well as broader shifts in the current political, movement and funding landscape.

Dr. Akshay Khanna will follow-up with each of the members individually(organizational) to set up a time for an in-person visit in this first phase of this project, which is focused on relationship building and meaningful assessment. Based on conversations, capacity building activities can be developed from July to September from Astraea and learn from peers. We look forward to putting in place more strategies for shared learning across our partners, especially in this political climate.
Broadly, the first stage of the project is an assessment of the capacity building priorities of community organisation and support organisations. To this end, we are planning to hold a session so that we can explore few themes such as Formation of Transgender Board in the State, Right to Livelihood ,Education and Right to freedom.(issues suggested by the core team)

Dastangoi: Dastan Miyan Azaad ki
Fri Oct 5, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
Dastangoi [made up of two Persian words: 'Dastan' meaning long tale and 'goi' meaning to tell it], is the lost art form of Urdu storytelling, revived in recent years. The original Dastans were epic tales of adventure and magic, among which Dastans of Amir Hamza were most prominent. In recent years new Dastans have expanded to include folk and other tales as well and the language has widened from chaste Urdu to include Hindustani and Hindi. The beauty of Dastangoi lies in the fact that it is the purest form of storytelling, which relies heavily on just two factors: the beauty of the language and the skill of the narrator.

Dastan Miyan Azad ki

This Dastan is a carefully curated selection of 3 nuggets of different moods, from 'Fasana-e-Azad'. Authored by Pandit Ratan Naath Sarshaar, this gem of Urdu literature was hugely popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is a compilation of anecdotes and encounters of its central character- Miyan Azad and brings alive, in its word pictures, the Lucknow of the post-1857 era. The Dastan is embellished with the element of music, in carefully chosen songs based on classical ragas, highlighting the different moods.

The ageless appeal of this Urdu classic lies in its rich tapestry of colloquial language, ornamental expressions and lyrical writing peppered with occasional couplets, to describe festivals, rituals, festivities, mourning, feasts etc. It’s like a brilliant multi faceted diamond, flashing various moods and flavours. Published in book form first in 1880, 'Fasana-e-Azad' was serialised from December 1878 to December 1879 in 'Avadh Akhbar', an Urdu weekly published from Lucknow by Munshi Nawal Kishore.

Soz Khwani : Story of Karbala
Sat Oct 6, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan
“Soz-khwani”, is a poetic & musical expression of a battle against tyranny in Karbala 1400 years ago by a group of seventy two people. This poetic and musical form is a beautiful expression of human emotions weaved in Indian symbols, narration of life and culture. This Art form is performed traditionally during the month of Muharram. Muharram is month of mourning for Shia Muslims. The form is performed during the close gatherings in an event called the “Majalis” where people gather for mourning for the sacrifices made in Karbala.
The Art form has really been an important tradition of Awadh in India in terms of classical Awadhi, Urdu and some Persian poetic forms. Soz-khwani is also very much part of the folk music traditions of Awadh though not widely appreciated as they have been only closely associated to personal religious beliefs and traditions. The compositions for Soz-Khwani are based on the Indian Ragas.
The Art form was part of many Shia family traditions in Awadh but now there are very few families who are still holding this tradition. The family Askari comes from belongs to a ‘Qasba’ (town) situated in the heart of Awadh called Mustafabad in Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh in India. The family has been practicing and has preserved the Art form in a similar way like any other oral cultural traditions. But now there are very few in our generation who are practicing these classical forms.

Dastangoi: Dastan Miyan Azaad ki
Sun Oct 7, 6:00 PM

Soz Khwani: Story of Karbala
Sun Oct 7, 8:00 PM
