Why Me?: Hailing from a small town in India (Hubli) and having traveled extensively both within in India and internationally, I have experienced
first-hand, the growth as a person and in confidence levels enabled by travel. And, I have realized that people and world at large is not as bad or
dangerous as it is made to be on a daily basis. And, I want to spread this message as wide as possible.

Envisioned Societal Impact: Encourage women from semi-urban and rural parts of developing Asian countries discover themselves, gain
confidence and grow both personally and professionally through travel experiences.

countries such as India, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Australia.

Why Women?: Women in this part of the world, especially in the non-urban areas are still considered and treated as the weaker gender and are

Heirloom Indian Folk
Tue Aug 28, 7:30 PM
Runki Goswami
This is a concert celebrating heirloom Indian Folk in its unique and original form. . Indian folklore and folk music is classical talent which many Indians remain unaware of. Given how vast and diverse the country is, and the fact that at about every 100 kilometers a different dialect is spoken, its musical traditions have been woefully neglected for lack of interest, knowledge and touristic value. It is my humble effort to revive and keep true Indian folk music alive not only in India but also on the international diaspora. My music concerts are just not about singing, but narrating the history and interpretation of every pastoral folk rendition accompanied by authentic instrumentals. In this particular concert, I will take the audience through a journey from North to South India through folk music in its original language. I would be singing almost 20 folk songs in 10+ different languages.I had first done this concert in India International Centre in Delhi, followed by yet another detailed version of it in India High Commission London. I now want to spread awareness around Indian folk and take it within Indian and abroad.

K-Circle Quiz of the Month
Sat Sep 1, 4:30 PM
K-Circle Quiz Club
K-Circle is today India's oldest quiz club, formed in 1972, and is based in the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. This Saturday would be the K-Circle Quiz of the Month at Lamakaan which would be a lively, engaging and informally informative quiz session that anybody is welcome to attend! A motley group, K-Circle is open to members of all ages. We are a truly informal club as we don’t have a form for new entrants to fill. There are no registrations, no frills, no badges, no pins/medals, no passwords. . . if you come in late, you just may have to perch on the window sill, but that's about it! The quiz would be a team event, with the teams being formed on spot. Do bring your friends and family along as well for what should surely be a thrilling Saturday evening! K-Circle quizzes have the well-deserved reputation of being thoroughly researched, highly interesting and innovative (far removed from the mugging-from-GK books sort of quiz that is all too common hereabouts). We meet every Saturday at a pre-decided location in the twin cities. Information regarding upcoming sessions is updated on the website - www.kcircle.com As well as our Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/kcircle/ You can also add yourself to our subscribers' mailing list by sending an email to kckcircle@gmail.com.

Theyyam is a fascinating ritualistic art form, very unique to Kerala. It is a colorful, expressive and transcendent experience both for the artist and the audience. Few Indians and westerners have explored this art so far. I have captured some of its beauty with my lens following artists and watching many Theyyams for months. My book 'Theyyam: Merging with the Divine' is going to be published shortly. Remembering Operation Polo
Sun Sep 16, 7:30 PM
Yunus Lasania & Lamakaan Programming Council
On September 17, 1948, the Indian army which was sent by the government had taken over the princely state of Hyderabad. Titled 'Operation Polo' and known as 'Police Action', the event annexed areas of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka, which were then under Hyderabad, to the Indian union.

The operation was initiated after Osman Ali Khan, the last and seventh monarch of the Asaf Jahi dynasty was deliberating between joining the Indian union and staying independent.

Anything but a simple takeover, Operation Polo had resulted in thousands of deaths, apparently at the hands of the Indian army (preceded by bouts of violence against citizens by the militia Razakaars run by Kasim Razvi, who later became the leader of the MIM). September 17 this year marks 70 years since the incident took place.

Mr. Burugula Narsing Rao (86) , then a college student, and someone who witnessed the murder of journalist Shoaibullah Khan (by the Razakaars) and what had transpired during the period will be speaking at Lamakaan on the occasion. So come join us for a discussion.

Conscious Fashion

Namrata Manot
The dyeing part of the process is a major culprit where maximum harmful chemicals are used. Hence the need to appreciate and apply natural dyes on fabrics is a sustainable solution in the long run. Natural dyeing would cause no air, water or soil pollution and no harm to human skin if the herbs and minerals used in dyeing are ayurvedic and non toxic.

Many eco friendly companies and organisations claim they use LOW IMPACT DYES, but they do affect the environment and the human body. We need to adopt a no-impact dyeing because we are trying to maintain the natural life cycle

we would have a deep conversation on sustainability in dyes, organic clothing, and natural dyeing as a solution. I have been working on conscious fashion, natural dyed clothing and cretaing awareness on natural dyes for past 4 years and done several local and residential workshops in other locations.

Topic: Understanding Electoral Rolls and Voter Registration

The Election Commission of India has launched the National Electoral Rolls Purification and Authentication Programme in 2015 to streamline electoral rolls by detecting anomalies. Further, the commission has been working with various state governments to improve the voter lists. With the Telangana elections being held in the upcoming months, the commission has announced a special summary revision of the electoral rolls. The session will discuss this entire process and help people understand what an electoral roll means, how to get enrolled or get anomalies corrected if your name does not figure in the roll.

The discussants are:

Astraea’s program works with diverse sexualities in India. It is to deepen capacity building and “accompaniment” support to grantee partners over the course of this year. Akshay Khanna is engaged to develop this program to coordinate responsive capacity building opportunities and support Astraea in documenting the impact of grant making as well as broader shifts in the current political, movement and funding landscape.

Dr. Akshay Khanna will follow-up with each of the members individually(organizational) to set up a time for an in-person visit in this first phase of this project, which is focused on relationship building and meaningful assessment. Based on conversations, capacity building activities can be developed from July to September from Astraea and learn from peers. We look forward to putting in place more strategies for shared learning across our partners, especially in this political climate.
Broadly, the first stage of the project is an assessment of the capacity building priorities of community organisation and support organisations. To this end, we are planning to hold a session so that we can explore few themes such as Formation of Transgender Board in the State, Right to Livelihood ,Education and Right to freedom.(issues suggested by the core team)

Court Martial is a gripping, engrossing and powerful play written by Swadesh Deepak. More than Five thousand shows of this play have been performed across the country by various theatre groups. Great performances, hard hitting dialogues, intense dramatic moments and a fantastic climax make this play one of the most performed Hindi plays in the last 25 years.

Court Martial is the story of a recruit Ramchandar who is accused of killing his senior officer and injuring another. Ramchandar's trial brings startling facts into light that questions the norms of society. This Court Martial is presided by war veteran Col. Surat Singh, accustomed to the brutality of life but is left completely unarmed and broken during the course of this trial. Ramchandar's trial is not only a fight for his life but a fight for a bigger truth. A truth that is more important than his own life.

From booking cases against dissenting voices to mob lynching, the socio-political atmosphere today in the country has become that of fear. Be it student leaders or rights activists, labels such as “urban naxals” and “anti-nationals” are being thrown at those who differ and voice their opinion, especially against the ruling government.

It is in that context that Jawaharlal Nehru University research scholar Umar Khalid, who faced an attack on his life, will discuss aforementioned subjects in conversation with Arunank Latha, student leader from Osmania University this Friday evening at 4 pm. We at Lamakaan invite all of you to be part of the discussion

Theyyam: Merging with the Divine
Sat Sep 8, 5:00 PM

Theyyam is a fascinating ritualistic art form, very unique to Kerala. It is a colorful, expressive and transcendent experience both for the artist and the audience. Few Indians and westerners have explored this art so far. I have captured some of its beauty with my lens following artists and watching many Theyyams for months. My book 'Theyyam: Merging with the Divine' is going to be published shortly. The book is a collection of the photographs I have taken and folktales of Theyyams that I have gathered from artists and local experts.

Wed Sep 19, 5:00 PM

At the national level, there are petitions in the Supreme Court demanding the election commission to publish electoral data in text formats instead of scanned pdf.

The elections to the Telangana Assembly are due in the next few months. The Election Commission of India is also in the process of finalising the electoral roll for these elections.

The session will discuss this entire process and help people understand what an electoral roll means, how to get enrolled or get anomalies corrected if your name does not figure in the roll.

The discussants are:
1. Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu: Rakesh has been working on issues related to Right to Information (RTI) for a decade. He is a Data/Information enthusiast & passionate about Governance/Policy issues.
