Gond Art Workshop with Trishna Patnaik

India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals. The motifs are further associated with the rich repertoire of the community and strongly show the interactions with the cosmic, natural and social worlds of humans at multiple levels and contexts. Movie screening: No Other Land
Thu Apr 17, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
2024 documentary film ‘No other land’ is made by Palestinian-Israeli collective of four activists. The filmmakers describe this film as an act of resistance against the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The film shows the forced displacement of Palestinian people by Israeli military in a village called Masafar Yatta in occupied West Bank. In the day time, Israeli bulldozers demolish the homes while the residents continue to rebuild their homes in the night. The young Palestinian activist Basel starts a film collective with Jewish-Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham and two co-directors. From the summer of 2019, they start recording every brutality of soldiers in their handheld cameras. Using old home videos and voice-overs, Basel explains the atrocities on their community has been going on since long time. Although the documentary was completed in October 2023, the filmmakers have ended it with disturbing images of the violence of Israeli settlers in Masafar Yatta during the Israeli attack on Gaza.

We are screening this movie in solidarity with the indomitable spirit of Palestinian people who are fighting for their liberation from the settler colonial project of Zionist Israel. The screening will be followed by a discussion about the movie and the Palestinian resistance in general.

Imagining Palestine
Sun Apr 20, 2:00 PM
Manasa Tantravahi
Are you curious about the Palestinian condition, but too intimidated/ unaware about what's really going on? Are you someone who adores fiction and can really grasp an issue through reading stories and relying on your imagination? We've got something for you!

The White Library, whose title is inspired by a fictitious story in a book called Invisible Library by Lawrence Liang, has been running book clubs both general and specific since 2019 with its host, Manasa Tantravahi.

Last year, we ran an online experimental reading group that read Palestinian fiction exclusively (between July - December 2024). We're back with a new chapter of the club (with a fresh reading list!! and with a name name: 'Imagining Palestine'!) and taking it offline.

What is 'Imagining Palestine' about? It's a limited discussion series slash book club that reads Palestinian fiction exclusively, now in its second run. As your host, Manasa will be talking about how to close read the novels/ short story collections that we select to read, what themes and elements to look out for, and supplementing our discussions with material surrounding each other. It's intended to be a guided, sensitive and a no-judgement space to learn about and discuss the situation, through reading novels exclusively. And don't worry about reading slow (or if you're just getting out of a slump!): the club will read no more than a book a month!

*THIS session is the introductory one, where we discuss reading lists, and the structure of the club. So feel free to join in!

Contact The White Library at +91-9650628070 and/ or m.tantravahi@gmail.com for more details on the club! See you!

See you!
