One of Vijay Tendulkar's most controversial plays, this play vividly captures the strange and complex pathology of Sakharam, who while on one hand, wants to please his women, on the other hand, bullies them as well. He is, in one moment, a freethinking crusader for women’s rights and the very next moment sees him as a philistine- scornful of their devotion to him.
He strongly believes in exploiting the corrupt system for his own gain but realizes too late the price of playing the game.

Half-Chicken
The play “Half-Chicken” is about a chicken hatched with only half a body, one leg, one wing, one eye, and only half as many feathers as the other chicks. She becomes the centre of attention at the ranch where she is born, because the animals consider her very special and unique. With her uniqueness, she is propagated as half chicken Baba. Half-Chicken Baba becomes vain because of this attention and decides to leave the ranch to visit the king Sri Krishnadevaraya. On her journey she meets people who are in need of help but she does not help them. What happens to Half-Chicken as a result of this is what we will know from this delightful short play.
Pinocchio- The robot
This play is devised from a play Pinocchio 3.5 which was written by Eric Cobel. Gill Bates is a computer magnate. He has a Software Company, billions of dollars, power but something is missing from his life: children. So he builds a little robot named Pinocchio. The present play is about Pinocchio who gets diverted easily from others.
What is it that makes us human? Is it that we love, that we fight ? That we laugh ? Cry ? Our curiosity ? The quest for discovery ?
Driven by these questions, filmmaker and artist Yann Arthus-Bertrand spent three years collecting real-life stories from 2,000 women and men in 60 countries. Working with a dedicated team of translators, journalists and cameramen, Yann captures deeply personal and emotional accounts of topics that unite us all; struggles with poverty, war, homophobia, and the future of our planet mixed with moments of love and happiness.

While listening to Sufi music and Qawwali becomes more and more trendy, there are debates on what the true Sufi music is. Is it some meditative chanting that provides peace and tranquility to an individual in today’s stressful urban life? Is it supposed to involve a lot of rhythm and high octave vocals using the names of god or Ali, as often exhibited by contemporary Indian cinema or pop music groups? Or is there something more to Sufi music and literature than mere self-indulgence? Does it have a social relevance in today’s life? Could it help us connect to our pluralistic past? Or could it help us learn ways to coexist in today’s multicultural society? These are some of the questions that we hope to address in an intensive short workshop involving music practitioners and media professionals who have been researching or practicing these themes since many years.
The workshop will include an informal lecture-interaction, poetry recitations, screening of audio/video clips as well as documentary films. The main presenter of the workshop is Delhi-based author and filmmaker Yousuf Saeed, who along with his team has been successfully conducting such workshops for last couple of years, the details of which can be seen on www.ektara.org. Kindly register in advance for participation.
What to expect and who can attend:
This workshop is open for anyone interested in learning to appreciate Sufi poetry, music and Qawwali better. The participants do not have to have a prior knowledge or training of music, nor is there an age-bar. The participants do not have to be Sufis or belonging to any particular religion or community. Anyone with an interest in music, literature and cultural history can enroll in this workshop. Most presentations will be given in English with some Urdu/Hindi content. Kindly note that this is not a course for learning music, but is meant to learn appreciating music, poetry and their social contexts. Although 4 hours are not sufficient for a comprehensive understanding of such a subject, it is hoped that by the end of the workshop, the participants would be able to better appreciate the nuances of Sufi music, poetry, and Qawwali and its historical context. We wish to keep this half-day completely informal, friendly and homely. You are free to ask questions and raise doubts whenever you wish. The workshop would include a midway break for tea. Registered participants will get reading and listening material (in digital format).

In today’s India where the corporate media focuses only on big cities and urban glitz, Qasba Sanskriti, a short series of documentary films, travels to some historic qasbas or small towns in Uttar Pradesh which continue to carry the age-old traditions of sycretic culture and shared living between people of different religions and sects.
Director: Yousuf Saeed- Nawed Akhter Duration: 40 mins
This documentary explores the material culture, performative arts and crafts of Amroha, a small town near Delhi in north India, especially focusing on the evolution of Islamic and syncretic cultural values and interdependence between different communities and sects of people, through their arts, crafts, religious rituals and iconography. Amroha is not only famous for its handicrafts such as woodwork, handlooms, embroidery, and percussion instruments, but also for being a centre for the production of Urdu literature, poetry and music. The story of Amroha’s communal harmony is told in the film in the voices of its Hindu and Muslim residents.
This film is a cultural sketch of Bilgram, a small town near Lucknow in north India, especially focusing on the performative arts associated with the Shia rituals of Ashura on Muharram. For many centuries Bilgram has been a rich centre of refined culture and literature, producing several scholars, poets as well as administrators for the historic province of Awadh and beyond. The film also looks at the syncretic or plural values ingrained in the daily lives of the people of Bilgram, where the Muharram is commemorated by Shias, Sunnis and Hindus with equal passion, using local iconography and plural symbols.

With given name Syed Abdullah Shah Qadri, Bulleh Shah was a poet, humanist and philosopher who practiced the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry.
The verse form Bulleh Shah primarily employed is the Kafi, popular in Punjabi, Sindhi and Saraiki poetry.
Bulleh Shah's writings represent him as a humanist, someone providing solutions to the sociological problems of the world around him as he lives through it, describing the turbulence his motherland of Punjab is passing through, while concurrently searching for God. His poetry highlights his mystical spiritual voyage through the four stages of Sufism: Shariat (Path), Tariqat (Observance), Haqiqat (Truth) and Marfat (Union). The simplicity with which Bulleh Shah has been able to address the complex fundamental issues of life and humanity is a large part of his appeal.
Many people have put his kafis to music, from humble street-singers to renowned Sufi singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pathanay Khan, Abida Parveen, the Waddali Brothers, Sain Zahoor and band Junoon.
Bulleh Shah's verses have been an inspiration to painters as well like Geeta Vadhera.
All are welcome to this evening of Sufism.

These guidelines have invited strong reactions from student communities across the country as it is an intrusion into their privacy and personal freedom.
These directives recommend the use of biometrics for marking student attendance in classes as well as in hostels, pointing out that such measures will have the additional advantage of enabling administrations “to keep an eye on a student’s movement and whereabouts in failsafe manner”(sic).
Increasing surveillance and curbing of freedom: UGC guidelines mention use of CCTV cameras, armed security guards and "digital mechanism can enable HEIs to keep an eye on a student’s movement and whereabouts in failsafe manner"
The guidelines call for setting up a university police station within the premises of the HEIs!
It mentions that the "HEIs should organize quarterly parents-teachers meet (PTM) so that grievances and gaps in system can be addressed and resolved. Online complaint registration system can also be launched so that issues can be addressed before they slip out of hands of authorities."
Let us unite to defeat such attempts to curb campus democracy in the name of providing safety to students!

Reclaiming Verse, setting poetry free : is an open mic poetry event. It seeks to create an environment where everybody feels comfortable to share stories, because the idea is to look at poetry and people as neither make sense in isolation. The floor will be open to all styles of poetry, with no linguistic barriers ideally creating a situation where a wide spectrum of stories can be told, and heard.
This will be a safe space for the poetry and the stories, that have been silenced by the overarching noise created by people around us. We invite queer persons, feminists, straight allies and everybody else who wants to talk poetry - to come and share their stories with us. With each piece of poetry, let's reclaim verse. With each story, lets set poetry free.
We want to engage with you in a discourse around fluidity of gender and sexuality. To understand that our identities are often constructed in immutable casts that then relate to difficulties that we face. To celebrate the diversity that exists within us. To protest the periodic violence that many among us face on a regular basis. And to reclaim the militant activist space that we seem to have lost. This event is to specifically protest and oppose the transphobic violence that has been happening in Hyderabad, and to visibly agitate against it armed with poetry.
All are welcome.

Authors, poets and artistes continue to return national/state awards and resign from the Sahitya Akademi to protest the institution’s silence on attacks against writers and intellectuals. He returned both central and state governments' awards and rewards. He happens to be the first writer in Telangana state to return the awards. He returned state award in opposition to the Telangana government's FAKE encounter in which two young Telangana separate statehood activists (who later joined Maoists out of disillusionment due to Telangana govt's pro-elite policies) were killed by the Telangana govt.
As far as Sahitya Akademi award is concerned, he returned the award in protest against the growing intolerance towards minorities and attacks/killings of writers/atheists.

Ismat Chughtai, was a veritable tour de force of women's writing in India, a woman who was a feminist by instinct, long before it became fashionable to flash the badge of feminism. She brought to the fore the modernity inherent in the actions of the poorest of rural Indian women as well as the stagnation in the minds of the so called urban elite. Ruthlessly honest and deeply perceptive, she presented the truth of society and its women in the same nakedness in which she saw them. She wrote with a rare courage, truth and good humour which endear her to everyone who comes across her writings. This seventy minute play is a dramatized performance of three short stories as vignettes. A letter penned by Sa’adat Hasan Manto on his view of Ismat as a woman is read out as a prelude.

It follows the events from the year of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 to his hanging, along with Raj Guru and Sukhdev in 1931. Far from wanting to cause any bloodshed or violence, his decision to throw a bomb in the assembly was motivated by the desire to draw attention to the questions of freedom and equality. The play also touches on the ideological differences between Bhagat Singh and Congress.
It is a play by Piyush Mishra and performed by LCM.
