A Lecture on
"Stories from Behind the Walls of Prisons: A sorry state of Indian prison system"
by
Arun Ferreira
About the topic:
The life on the other side of the wall is very different. The prisoners are made to feel like slaves and each one is at the mercy of the authorities. The Indian prison system perpetuates many of the injustices of the penal system set up by the British. For example, inmates of foreign origin or of high caste and social status are routinely imprisoned under relatively better conditions and segregated from those inmates who are poorer and of lower social position. Tribal and Dalit inmates are subject to various forms of abuse, ranging from the denial of visitors and refusal to provide medical care, to prolonged labor, sexual harassment, rape and “concealed” physical and mental torture. Many of India’s prisons date back to the era of British colonial rule, with thousands of prisoners kept in crumbling facilities largely unchanged since the beginning of the last century. The only major all-Indian prison reform ever implemented dates back to the Indian Jails Committee of 1919-1920. This lecture dispels myths, misconceptions and many claims of reforms by the authorities and gives a personal account of the speaker on the gory, plight and merciful conditions of the Indian prisons.
Brief note about Arun Ferreira:
Arun Ferreira is an Indian political activist and cartoonist based in Mumbai. In 2007, he was branded as the leader of the propaganda and communications wing of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was acquitted of all charges in 2014. Arun Ferreira was a free man. He reveals the horrors he faced in prison and describes how several others are facing similar situations all around India. He is the author of several articles and books. His recent book “Colors of the Cage: A Prison Memoir” is an eye-witness account of life in an Indian prison.

Khayal Darpan, divided into four parts, totaling a 100 minutes, starts by exploring Pakistan's melodic past, especially in Lahore where south Asia's most famous musicians of early 20th century performed in large concerts as well as small baithaks (homely gatherings) and takias (shrines). It talks about the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Raushanara Begum, and Nazakat-Salamat Ali, and their discerning local audience who could not be pleased by any substandard music. The partition of India changed the scenario drastically as hundreds of musician families migrated from India to Pakistan, while many Hindu and Sikh patrons of music migrated the other way around. The film looks at the innovative ways in which the musicians struggled to keep their art alive for the new generations.
Synopsis:
While much of the literature on the Partition of India provides disturbing accounts of separation and violence, very little academic research has been done on its impact on the material culture of South Asia, especially the arts, music and other traditional forms. Since the apparent justification for the Partition, the ‘two-nation theory’, recognized Hindus and Muslims as two dissimilar communities unlikely to coexist, it was popularly assumed that the Indian Muslims migrating to Pakistan took with them whatever “belonged” to them, leaving behind the “purer” culture of the Hindus in India. As it seemed like the closing of a chapter on cultural co-existence, new chapters had to be written on both sides of the border to sort out what belonged to whom. North Indian classical music, along with other traditional cultural forms, had to bear the brunt of this tug of war, since it represented one of the most vigorous examples of cultural plurality, besides being practiced abundantly in the regions affected by the Partition.
Yousuf Saeed, an Indian filmmaker from Delhi, visited Pakistan in 2005 on research fellowship to explore the impact of 1947 partition on the cultural traditions, especially the classical music of the region. Spending over 5 month traveling through Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad - interviewing musicians and scholars, attending music concerts, and observing the teaching of music in various institutions, Yousuf not only managed to document some of the surviving practitioners and patrons of art music, but also raised many vital questions about cultural identity, nationalism, legitimacy of music in Islam, Pakistan's popular culture and its affairs with India, and the survival of classical music itself in South Asia. The result is a feature-length documentary film, Khayal Darpan, highlighting some well-known as well as many lesser known but talented musicians of Pakistan, breaking many stereotypes about the country.
About the Filmmaker:
Graduating from Jamia Millia’s Mass Communication Research Centre (Delhi), Yousuf Saeed started his career in television with the Times TV (Times of India) in 1990, co-directing the science series Turning Point. Later, Yousuf directed many documentary films for Doordarshan and other institutions, including a series on Ladakh and one on the Sufi poet Amir Khusrau. His short films Basant, The Train to Heaven and others have been shown at prestigious international venues such as the universities of Harvard, Boston, Columbia, Chicago, Texas (in the US) and of Heidelberg (Germany), and Vienna (Austria). His other recent films are Qasba Sanskriti: Amroha, Making of the Taj, and Khusrau Darya Prem Ka, among others. He also wrote the illustrated book Muslim Devotional Art in India (Routledge, 2012). A talk by Amit Deshwal.
Lecture followed Q & A and discussion
About the topic:
Every child and every culture is unique. If we wish to retain this uniqueness in the children, we need to treat them with love, respect them as unique individuals, give them time and space, help them see the world through their own eyes and support them where they seek help to find their own meaning of life. In his talk, Amit Deshwal wishes to explore how the present education system is adversely affecting the diversity of life and uniqueness of being.
Brief note about Amit Deshwal:
Amit Deshwal graduated from IIT Madras in 2008 and joined the private equity arm of World Bank. Inspired by Tagore's and Tolstoy's thoughts on education, he quit his job a year later to start a learning space for children. He spent nearly three years travelling around the country learning from different spaces that were trying to understand meaning of education beyond formal schooling and volunteering there for his sustenance. These three years that he spent both in solitude and living with diverse communities were the ones, he believes, when his real education began. He spent his last three years working with a small alternative learning space in Hyderabad called Centre for Learning. While his quest continues, he now spends time working with a group of children who chose not to follow the regular schooling pattern. You could read more about his learnings and his thoughts here at earthisnotround.wordpress.com.

Today's screening is a Telugu masterpiece 'Aakali Rajyam" that showcased the agonising 80s with India at cross roads - to chose between Tradition Vs Progression.
An amazing movie from an amazing director K. Balachander. His characterisation of an unemployed, multilingual, straight-forward, honest and a sincere person in the shallow, twisted world based on favoritism and "corporateised" world has been played to perfection by kamal Hasan. His recitation of SriSri's lines and their timing couldn't have been better tribute to the socialist poet. This is a tribute to doyens like Director KB, writer Ganesh Patro, Poet Sri Sri. MS Viswanathan, Acharya Athreya and thespian Kamal himself and other Techinicians.
Aakali Rajyam dwells on the premises of social satire and through its characters, critically analyzes the state of Indian polity and social situation.

This day's screening is Oscar winning "Man on the wire",
It takes a look at tightrope walker Philippe Petit's daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City's World Trade Center's twin towers in 1974, what some consider, "the artistic crime of the century."
