Folk Story Telling - Oggu Katha
Wed Mar 12, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Lamakaan celebrates its 4th Anniversary with this age old rich traditional story telling - Oggu Katha.

This evening's story is SON AGAINST MOTHER : THE TURBULENT TALE OF PARASURAMA and YELLAMMA.

A power-packed Oggu Katha performance of episodes from YELLAMMA KATHA and a demonstration of Yellamma Patam by Bolli Lakshminarasaiah Yadav and his troupe from Karimnagar district.

with explanatory introductions in Telugu and English.

Oggukatha is a traditional folklore singing praising and narrating the stories of Hindu gods. It originated among communties who devoted themselves to the singing of ballads in praise of Lord Shiva (also called Mallikarjuna). These tradition-loving and ritual-performing community moves from place to place, narrating the stories of their caste gods. Oggus are the traditional priests of the Yadavas and perform the marriage of Mallanna with Bhramaramba.

The narrator and his chorus i.e. two narrators-help in dramatizing the narration as very often, they transform themselves into two characters. The dramatization of the narrative is what gives the Oggu Katha its predominant place in the ballad tradition of Andhra Pradesh, especially in Telangana, where Oggu Katha prevalent.

drafted in this drama and can be enacted in this performance.

Don't Remember- what? Cucumbers!
Sun Mar 23, 7:00 PM
Sphoorthi Theatre for Educational Puppetry, Art & Craft-STEPARC
Worls Puppet day-March 21, 2013

The puppetry story is a story 'Remembering and Forgetting' by Shri T. Rangarajan-Theatre artists from Hubli- Dharwad region, Karnataka.

It is about brain connection: when one wants to remember certain things but forgets, the only way to make them remember is - to ask them not to remember it. Result: One keeps remembering it all the time.

Similar is our habits too. The story revolves around a bald head King who wants to regrow hair on his bald head. So, he invites the best Ayurvedic specialist, Siddha specialist and so on. As everybody fail in their attempts, a clever man by name Bantuklal Patra takes the advantage of the situation and promises to regrow hair on bald head of the King within a month. He prepares a special oil and asks the King to apply it on his head everyday, with a condition that he should not eat, see, touch, hear think or remember cucumbers - as he says "cucumbers have negative impact and hence, the hair growth would not be possible". Need not mention that Cucumber is the only thing king remembers all day and all night!

Daddy's lil girl !
Sun Apr 6, 6:00 PM
Octopus Studio
The play “Daddy’s lil girl” is divided in three parts which throw light on the 3 major parts of a woman’s life. The first
part is about how the parents of the girl are in doubt whether to have her or not, putting her very existence into
jeopardy. This part has both the mother and the father present arguments about why they should or shouldn’t
have a baby and another couple enacting the imaginations – both fears & expectations of the parents. How they
come to the decision whether or not they should have a baby is showcased in this part.
The second part shows the girl in her early twenties. She has just got a job and her parents are looking for
matrimonial alliances for her. However, she doesn’t like any of the matches her parents bring forth. After a long
wait, she does finally like one of the matches her parents bring and the wedding is fixed…but only a few days
before the wedding she gets to know something about the guy that will make her rethink her decision to marry
him. What is that thing..? What does she decide? How she copes with her decision? Does her family support her?
All these questions are answered in the second part.
The third part is a monologue that portrays the life of a highly successful woman in her mid-30’s and is a divorcee.
She is tired of the questions she is asked at every turn of life, the justification she has to give for every step she
takes. Annoyed at the change of people’s attitude towards her since the divorce, she expresses her frustration at
the lack of support from her close ones and expresses anguish at the current state of affairs of the chauvinistic
society.

Directed by: Rahul R
Directors Note:
‘Daddy’s lil girl’ is a depiction of the various stages of women life which are influenced or
dictated by the allegedly ‘stronger’ sex or the same .This play is a unheard voice of the
ordinary women who fails to express he distress to her loved one & also talk about how
women can take control completely when required. We focus on her ….her sacrifices, her

Oggukatha is a traditional folklore singing praising and narrating the stories of Hindu gods. The narrator and his chorus i.e. two narrators-help in dramatizing the narration as very often, they transform themselves into two characters. The story is about two strangers who meet at a park and revolves around how one of them plays on the mind of the other timid guy and psychologically controls him and finally provokes him to stab him and leave him to die. The way how a person can be almost hypnotized with words and finally brought under complete control through sheer brain games is wonderfully
drafted in this drama and can be enacted in this performance.

Annapurna International School of Film + Media acting students are enacting this play under the tutelage of Rammohan Holagundi.
