Jan Samwaad - A Musical Movement
Sat Feb 16, 6:00 PM
Jan Samwaad
Jan Samwaad(Dialoguing with the people) is a musical movement which tries to engage its audience into social and political issues plaguing our society and our times. These renditions, simple in form yet profound in essence, are a melange of personal and social issues encouraging the audience to ponder over some fundamental, stereotypical and preconceived societal concerns. During these conversations with the masses Jan Samwaad questions whether it is worth spending the entire life trying to find God or the so called Eternal or Divine without lending attention to the issues that we face in our daily life. Jan Samwaad is a mixed bag of songs that touch upon a variety of social predicaments be it the very relevant issue of illegal and unjust land acquisition from a farmer whose life is but synonymous to drudgery to the quest of a newly married innocent young girl to find a sojourn for herself as she embarks upon an endless journey of responsibilities and expectations. The hopelessness and despair that is so marked of today’s common man and his experiences owing to a variety of issues is something that genuinely concerns Jan Samwaad. It is in this wake of despondency that the listeners are egged to rethink if the efforts to find an “external” source of peace or power are worthwhile at all. Recognizing the need to restore communal harmony in a society with disintegrating values, Jan Samwaad seeks to challenge the motives of the perpetrators of communal hatred who still exist amongst us, even though they are not positioned in the power centre. Along this journey Jan Samwaad uses the “traditional”, but yes, only to question the “traditional” and employ the “typical” to disengage from it and look at the “atypical”.

They Said, and Woman River
Tue Feb 26, 6:30 PM
Space, Goa
Lamakaan hosts a 3 day gender centric events "focus FEMME" a showcase of programs that question gender, sex and stereotypes.

They Said, and Woman River, a performance in voice, movement that passionately decries violence against women.
Woman River is actually a passionate composition, based on the poetic links that bind a larger dramatic work written by Ujwala Samarth, also an old friend of the ensemble. The ensemble captures the trauma of communal violence through the voices of three women, each of whom delivers a monologue. Also questioning the trauma and rape of mother earth.

They Said was written by Uma Narayan, a friend of the ensemble who teaches philosophy at Vassar College, and captures the anger of girls chided because they read too much. When they took workshops with students of the Nirmala Institute of Education and the Goa College of Architecture, Panjim, the ensemble encouraged this poem being used in the students’ performances that ensued.

Sita sings the Blues - Film
Thu Feb 28, 7:00 PM
Masooma
Lamakaan hosts a 3 day film festival "focus FEMME" a showcase of films that question
gender, sex and stereotypes.

Sita Sings the Blues is an animated film written, directed, produced and animated entirely by American artist Nina Paley primarily using 2D computer graphics and Flash Animation.
It intersperses events from the Ramayana, light-hearted but knowledgeable discussion of historical background by a trio of Indian shadow puppets, musical interludes voiced with tracks by Annette Hanshaw and scenes from the artist's own life. The ancient mythological and modern biographical plot are parallel tales, sharing numerous themes

In an episode taken from the director's own life, animator Nina Paley starts the film living happily in a San Francisco apartment with her husband and cat. Her husband then accepts the offer of a six-month contract working in Trivandrum, India, and moves there alone to take up the position. After several months of very little contact, he calls to inform his wife that the contract has been extended.
Bewildered by his callous indifference to their separation, Nina sublets their apartment, leaves their beloved cat behind and joins her husband in India. Upon her arrival he appears deeply unenthusiastic to be reunited and demonstrates neither affection nor sexual interest. A while later, Nina flies to a meeting in New York, where she receives a brief e-mail from her husband telling her that their relationship is over. Sad and alone, she stays in New York, finding comfort in a new cat and her study of the Ramayana.

Politi. ecology Adivasi Struggle
Fri Mar 1, 6:00 PM
Biju
This is a talk on "The Political Ecology of Democracy and Governance as Defined By Adivasi Struggles" - Presented by C.R.Bijoy

C R Bijoy walks us through the age-old history of tribal land struggles. He is a researcher and social activist in India who works with the Campaign for Survival and Dignity, an organisation which acts as a platform for all tribal organisations across India. Listen to the audio for his take on Tribal land struggles.
The 67.7 million people belonging to "Scheduled Tribes" in India are generally considered to be 'Adivasis', literally meaning 'indigenous people' or 'original inhabitants', though the term 'Scheduled Tribes' (STs) is not coterminous with the term 'Adivasis'. Scheduled Tribes is an administrative term used for purposes of 'administering' certain specific constitutional privileges, protection and benefits for specific sections of peoples considered historically disadvantaged and 'backward'.
The Constitution of India, which came into existence on 26 January 1950, prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth and it provides the right to equality, to freedom of religion and to culture and education.
STs are supposedly addressed by as many as 209 Articles and 2 special schedules of the Constitution - Articles and special schedules which are protective and paternalistic.

The Adivasis of India have raised the issue of forest rights to the forefront of the nation's politics. As the state dithers, a process of legislative enactment to address the “historic injustice” has emerged. This article is a narrative that examines the context that precipitated this crisis, the issues, the ground reality, the emergent proposal, and the historic background of the continuing struggles of Adivasis against colonization and internal colonization.

He is a fount of wisdom on local folk culture, and fascinates us with his stories of the past & present, and his ideas for the future. Shri Ravindra Sharma from an early age was a maverick from his conventional family, spending his time with the 'jeengars' [leather craftsmen & wood carvers], learning their techniques & recipes for mineral paints. He learnt brass wax-wire casting from the Ojhas and metal casting from the Ohtaris, and many other craft techniques. Besides learning craft techniques, Guruji roamed the local forests with parrot catchers, attended the 10 day wedding ceremonies of the Mathurias and has documented local traditions such as the Moharram of the local Muslims.

Guruji taught art at a local tribal school for 10 years, teaching the local Kolam boys to express their inner world through art forms of paint and sculpture

Guruji is an artist, a sculptor trained at the Baroda School of Art. His Brahmin family came from the Punjab a generation before him and settled in Adilabad with a small railway catering business. He was a maverick from his childhood, visiting the low caste Nakashi artisan households to watch wooden figures being carved and painted, after which his grandmother would not allow him into the house until he was purified by having a bucket of water poured over him.

Q2P - Film screeening
Sat Mar 2, 8:00 PM
Paromita Vohra
Q2P is a film about toilets and the city. It peers through the dream of Mumabi as a future Shanghai and searches for public toilets in Bombay with a small detour in Delhi, watching who has to queue to pee. As the film observes who has access to toilets and who doesn’t, we begin to also see the imagination of gender that underlies the city’s shape, the constantly shifting boundaries between public and private space; we learn of small acts of survival that people in the city’s bottom half cobble together and quixotic ideas of social change that thrive with mixed results; we hear the silence that surrounds toilets and sense how similar it is to the silence that surrounds inequality. The toilet becomes a riddle with many answers and some of those answers are questions – about gender, about class, about caste and most of all about space, urban development and the twisted myth of the global metropolis.

Sumanaspati Reddy
As a part of "Women's March", Lamakaan is hosting an array of films based on Gender issues and today's film is MERA APNA SHEHER (My Own City)by Sameera Jain.

This film is an experience of a gendered urban landscape - where the gaze, the voice and the body are at all times under surveillance. What if the multiple surveillances were to be turned upon themselves to observe what is contained in the everyday. The film explores whether there is a sense of ownership, of belonging to the city. Can a woman in the city, - as she continuously negotiates the polarities of anxiety and comfort - be free? Somewhere just under the surface of the `normal’ and in the lives of women cab drivers lie signs of reclamation of space and the gaze.

Handloom Bazaar
Sun Mar 10, 10:30 AM
Saraswati Kavula & Cheneta Colour Weaves
Woven in to the wonderful tapestry that is India, handloom weaving is a 4000 year old tradition. Handloom weaving is one of India’s predominant rural economic activities. This unique tradition has surpassed ages solely because of the magnificence of its craft, the mastery of its makers and patronizing consumers. Handlooms had a glorious past and o a penurious present. The handloom weavers used to live in a life of comfort and complacence in the past. They were respected for their invaluable craft that symbolized the essence of our rich culture and tradition. However, as time wheeled by machines began to exude dominance over human labour. In the state of Andhra Pradesh alone, there are about 320,000 handlooms on which about 500,000 families directly and 20,00,000 families indirectly depend for livelihoods. The recent years have witnessed migrations to cities in large numbers by handloom cotton weavers, taking up of alternative employment in rural industrial units and in extreme cases even starvation deaths or suicide deaths. The monthly handloom bazaar is one of the initiatives we are undertaking to bring back the wonder of handloom into mainstream popular culture, thus increasing the market for these products. In addition the exhibition cum sale hopes to educate the people at large on the issues of handloom weavers, and also on how to recognize the "real handloom" from fakes and "powerloom products". The bazaar will also include talks from time to time, display of weaving skills, and also will encourage children to learn these skills in an interactive way - like learning to use the "charkha" etc.

Listening Post - Women in Jazz
Sun Mar 10, 4:00 PM
Hyderabad Western Music Foundation
“Women in Jazz”
This Listening Post looks at women in Jazz. It has always been a battle for women to enter into or excel in fields that were dominated by men. Music was no exception. Although women were being accepted in other artistic fields, they faced a male chauvinism in the field of music, in the early years of Jazz. Here we look at some of the women who made a foray into, and then stormed the bastion of the jazz world. Women who were as brilliant in their singing as they were in their song writing or even as instrumentalists in the field of Jazz.
Presented by Shakila Kundu, Jazz-Lover, Singer, HWMF-Executive-Committee-Member
Listening Post : Pure listening to Classical and Jazz music recordings with visual aids, notes, Q/A-session, discussion.

It’s A Boy! - FILM
Sun Mar 10, 7:00 PM
Sumanaspati Reddy
As women's march, Lamakaan hosts an array of films to address films based on gender issues.

It's a Boy (It's going to be a boy) is a film made by Vani Subramanian. It deals with the public debate around sex-determination in India is decades old, and yet, it is only in the last few years that everyone seems to be talking about the ‘girl-child’ - doctors, religious leaders, the government, the public. Yet, male-female sex ratios are more alarming now than ever before. Why are we unable to reverse the trend? Why does the ‘son’ keep rising in India?
To address some of these questions, IT’S A BOY! (IT’S GOING TO BE A BOY) travels to Bombay, Delhi, Benares and Shillong. Going back in time to reveal how the current crisis of sex ratios had been foretold by those on the forefront of the campaigns against sex determination and pre-selection. Assessing government initiatives, looking beyond the rhetoric, and using the lens of culture to explore common beliefs about daughters and sons within the family, men and women in society.

Secodn film "Blood on my Hands" looks at how a woman's menstrual cycle is altered from being a marker of her fertility to something that renders her untouchable and hence subject to multiple taboos and regulations. As an individual, a woman or young girl is isolated in her struggle to come to terms with the
transformations in her body.

Inshallah Football -Film and Q&A
Tue Mar 12, 7:00 PM
Ashvin Kumar
Lamakaan is Celebrating its 3rd anniversary in a week long celebration of events kick started by this Hyderabad Preview of Inshallah, Football, the latest film by Oscar nominated film maker Ashvin Kumar's.

In Iraq, there is 1 soldier for every 166 civilians. In Kashmir, there is 1 for every 20. A Hizbul Mujaheddin ex-militant, his son- a footballer, an Argentinean football coach and his sparkling Brazilian wife grapple with life on the streets of Kashmir. A Kashmiri kid dreams to play football in Brazil, but life in a silent war gets in the way.

Inshallah, Football is about 18-year-old Basharat Baba, known as "Basha". His father, Bashir, was a much-wanted leader of the armed group Hizbul Mujahideen. When he left his home in Kashmir to join the training camps in Pakistan in the early 1990s, his son Basharat was barely two months old.
Basharat belongs to a new generation of Kashmiris, having grown up under the shadow of a protracted conflict. Ismat - Ek Aurat
Wed Mar 13, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
Ismat - Ek Aurat is a narration cum enactment of short stories written by Ismat Chughtai. These will be a selection of her well-known stories such as: 'Chui-Mui'(Touch-Me-Not),'Gharwaali'(Home-Maker),'Ghoonghat'(The Veil) and 'Saas'(Mother-in-Law).
'Ismat Ke Afsaanay' is a glimpse into the daily life of households and especially their women as seen by Ismat Chughtai. The stories are characterised by their ability to go deep into the very skins of their characters and bring out all their weaknesses, strengths, their ordinariness and their uniqueness. Where most people would look onto the street and see a multitude of passing by, Ismat Chughtai had the ability to see people and appreciate the beauty of each individual as a whole - freckles, frailties and all: whether it be the fascination of a young girl with the process of childbirth as seen in 'Chui-Mui' ('Touch-Me-Not'), or the haplessness of a virtuous, God-fearing man when faced by his devil-may-care house-keeper in 'Gharwaali' (Home Maker), or the veiled tug-of-war between a fair bride and her dark groom in 'Ghoonghat' (The Veil), or for that matter the 'tu-tu,main-main' (war of words) between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law in 'Saas' (Mother-In-Law). Each one of these characters belong to us. They are recognizable as uncle, aunt, father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, neighbor and perhaps that is what makes them so endearing and their reality so real to us.
The stories or Afsaanay, do not judge. They just hold a mirror to society; to the people around us and allow us the ability to experience the truth of each one.

let the HERDS multiply! - Folk
Thu Mar 14, 7:00 PM
Kadem Sammaiah and troupe
As part of its third anniversary celebrations, Lamakaan invites you to a thrilling evening of folk theatre, with Kadem Sammayya, the outstanding Mandechchula Katha artiste, and his troupe from the hinterlands of Warangal district.

Mandechchula or Manda-hechchula Katha is a little-known but tremendously thrilling and energetic narrative performance set to infectious rhythmic beats, soaring choral accompaniment and trance-inducing emotional outpourings.

The traditional herdsmen of the Deccan, who rear mainly sheep and goats, have their own great folklore and mythology. These vivid epic-narratives of the Gollas, Kurumas and similar caste denominations are sung and performed by professional artiste-troupes belonging to a set of sub-castes who depend on the Gollas etc. for their livelihoods.

The Mandechchulollu (or the performers who help the herds multiply) are one such community. Found in Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam, the Mandechchus have given a distinct performative spin and infectious energy to the tales of the great Golla-Yadava kings of yore and the stories associated with the great folk-hero and god of the rural Deccan, Mallanna (called Khandoba in Maharashtra and Mailara Deva in Karnataka).

This is a specially brought in show (by Sumanaspati Reddy and Dr. Raj Mohammad) to introduce the urban audience of Hyderabad to the vivacity of one of our truly vibrant and still-surviving folk performative traditions. And also to give a peep into how intimately it is connected with the life- pattern of a great and proud community.

It is a talk and presentaion by Shri Ravindra Sharma [Guruji] is the founder of Kala Ashram in Adilabad. Kala Ashram works as a 'Living Museum' providing resource services to local folk arts & crafts. He was a scholarship student at the Baroda School of Fine Art.

Wed Mar 6, 7:00 PM

Open to all. Entrance free.

It’s A Boy!

His passion is football, and he has been coached by Juan Marcos Troia, an Argentinean national and FIFA accredited football coach by profession. Marcos aspires to breed world class players from Kashmir; he and his wife, being attached to both Basha and Kashmir, migrate to Srinagar with their three daughters to take up Basha's cause.
