500 Expressions - Express Through Your Eyes

It is aptly said that eyes are the window to the soul. One can just look into your eyes and see the naked truth! Emoting and expressing feelings through eyes is considered a significant medium in art and cinema. Your eyes reveal the true “you”. One can’t deny the fact that eyes have become the focal point of our existence. While communicating with others, we observe and follow their eyes innately to convey emotions and expressions.
To see the first step taken by your child, to witness the marvels and scenic beauty of nature, to appreciate an artist’s grandeur performance, to sense the happiness in your loved one’s expression – to experience all the marvels of life as well as sweet nothings – we need a clear vision to revel and capture such beautiful and vivid moments in our imagination.
Here is where we walk into the picture. We provide you a clear vision with a strong mission. We, at 500 Expression, have devised an innovative concept to support and aid the deprived. We have a wide array of 500 frames owned by 500 individuals like you and me. Also, we have 100 frames contributed by renowned celebrities.
The frames owned by 400 individuals will be up for grabs online shortly. But, only one frame is available per person. The frames contributed by the crème de la crème celebrities will be auctioned. The money raised from the sale and auction will take care of the socially underprivileged. So, a part of your money will be donated for a good cause. Be a part of our social initiative and contribute in a unique way!
The pictures taken of your eyes shall be auctioned for a good cause. A part of the money raised from auctioning the frames (picture) of your eyes shall be donated to aid a needy.

Light Graffiti - Painting with light.

Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. Light Painting Photography can be traced back to the year 1914 when Frank Gilbreth, along with his wife Lillian Moller Gilbreth, used small lights and the open shutter of a camera to track the motion of manufacturing and clerical workers. Man Ray, in his 1935 series "Space Writing," was the first known art photographer to use the technique and Barbara Morgan began making light paintings in 1940.

"Children of Pyre" - Screening
Fri Nov 23, 7:30 PM
Nandkishor Boddu
'Children of the Pyre' is a compelling real-life, self-narrative of seven extraordinary children who make their living out of the dead. They collect, snatch or steal used coffin shrouds and sell them for petty amounts in order to ensure their own and their family's survival Tempered by the heat of the pyre, strengthened in the face of adversities and crafted by a volley of abuses, these imps weave through the pyres and struggle through disdain in this land of the dead. Laughing, smiling, weeping, fighting and shouting, these children run the race for survival - winning it again and again - everyday. The film is a terrible saga of exploitation that celebrates the victory of innocence over the most harrowing realities of life. It's a torturous journey through seared bodies, callous minds and dead consciences that constitute the human reality of the ghats at Varanasi.

The aim of Rang De Hyderabad Chapter is to screen a documentary that deals with social issues that India faces today. These films are made by filmmakers of all nationalities who want to shine a spotlight on social issues ranging from gender injustices, the climate change to the suicide of farmers in rural areas of India. Our will is two-fold: to screen these films for free (the audience is not charged)& then to have a discussion about the topic of the documentary among the audience after the screening.

5 BROKEN CAMERAS

by Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi
a Palastine and Algerian co-production

94 min, 2011

Palestinian farm laborer Emad has five video cameras, and each of them tells a different part of the story of his village's resistance to Israeli oppression. Emad lives in Bil'in, just west of the city of Ramallah in the West Bank. Using the first camera, he recorded how the bulldozers came to rip the olive trees out of the ground in 2005. Here, a wall was built directly through his fellow villagers' land to separate the advancing Jewish settlements from the Palestinians.

In the first days of resistance to the Jewish colonists and the ever-present Israeli soldiers, Emad's son Gibreel was born. Scenes shift from the infant growing into a precocious preschooler to the many peaceful acts of protest, and the steady progress of the construction of the dividing wall. Sympathizers from all over the world, including from Israel, provide help as resistance develops, but when the situation intensifies, people are arrested and villagers are killed.

Emad keeps on filming despite pleas from his wife, who fears reprisals. It makes for an intensely powerful personal document about one village's struggle against violence and oppression.

Two filmmakers create one extraordinary
work of art.

Startup Funeral - A Conference
Thu Dec 6, 5:00 PM
Deekshith
Startup Funerals are short conferences held once a month across different cities to help the global entrepreneurship community learn lessons in failure from startups and entrepreneurs.

You must have heard, that close to 99% of startups fail! Dont you want to know why?
We do! Thats why we started Startup Funerals.

Failure is considered a taboo in most our countries, hence people are afraid to fail and the ones that do, hate talking about it. Yet it is only through failure that we can understand the real lessons in success.

We believe the time is now to change how people perceive failure globally!

We want to foster a culture of innovation where people are comfortable to try out new ideas, take calculated risks, and be a little unreasonable.

At Startup Funerals we are on a mission to celebrate failure regularly by providing you a place where you are comfortable to share the stories of your failure and commemorate your startups with others to help our global entrepreneurship community learn valuable lessons from it.

'MindSweep 2.0 - Quiz
Sun Dec 9, 10:30 AM
Karnataka Quiz Association
MindSweep, our international solo championship, is intended as a vehicle for the things that are distinctive about the quizzing that happens in some (if not all) Indian cities.

The setters (Navin Rajaram, Kiran Vijayakumar and Arul Mani) have enjoyed taking (and bulbing at) the World Quizzing Championships, perhaps because Indian quizzing is a wee bit different from its international cousin. MindSweep is our attempt at sharing the things we enjoy about quizzing with an international audience.

So, what the devil is distinctive about Indian quizzing? A privileging of good guesswork over memory; the triumph of generalists over specialists; bombing a syllabus, rather than using one; the pleasure of parsing, or unknotting, or sometimes being pythoned by a carefully coiled question; a festive relationship with the English language; and the strange appetite for knowing joy and defeat in one instant–a mystical state known as AJM, or Goddamn-it-I-was-that-close.

After the first edition of MindSweep in Jan 2012, several embittered souls sent in their punning suggestions (not all of them were polite) for what we should actually have called the quiz. We laughed, and carried on. The first edition of a quiz, like a first kiss, must elicit some reaction, some `hubbub, babel, shindy, hullabaloo, stramash, charivari, and total contempt of repose,' or what's a contemptibly long zindagi for?

In MindSweep 2.0, the taker will meet ten sets of questions (200 in all) over two one-hour sessions–this means two installments of five sets of questions, interrupted by a short 30-minute break for answers, corrections, and worship of the bladder.

MindSweep 2.0: The Topics

Beyond Indian Ocean, I don’t see anyone…I see brown-wannabe whites. - Rabbi Shergill
INDIAN OCEAN.

Based in Delhi, the band has been in existence for 18 years. It has released less than 30 songs during this time, with not a filler amidst them. Every single one of them refuses to age and more than half of those are bona fide classics.

They conform to no music industry norms. Their songs (and instrumental pieces) have an average length of more than eight minutes (some go beyond ten), and none of them are love songs in the conventional sense. They sing in many different Indian languages, sometimes in dialects not easily understood; their most famous song is in the ancient language of Aramaic.

And yet, with their acoustic guitar-bass-tabla-drums-vocals format, their fluid jazzy vibe and rock intensity, they sound more urgently contemporary than most music does anywhere in the world. The strong influence of Indian Classical and the time-honoured earthiness of folk root their music more than most contemporary music anywhere in the world. All resulting in an absolutely unique sound, but accessible to anyone, anywhere.

All four have given up conventional earning careers to pursue their calling, without even a respectful nod to the commerce of their times. This abstinence has cost them mainstream presence and the backing of a premier music company.

And yet they have a following that is growing week after week. Their volume of concerts is growing all around the world (an average of 70 concerts a year now, over five continents).

Sorrow in Urdu Poetry
Thu Dec 13, 7:00 PM
Y Satyanarayana
Urdu shayari meiN tasavvur-e-Gham

The idea of sorrow has fascinated almost every single Urdu poet, be it the grief of unrequited love ( Gham-e-jaanaaN) or sorrow that arises from other circumstances (Gham-e-duniya). The sorrows of existence have no cure other than death, according to Ghalib:

Gham-e-hasti ka Asad kis se ho juz marg a'ilaaj
sham'a har rang meiN jalti hai seHer hone tak
(the grief of existence has no cure save death, Asad/the candle of life burns in all hues till daybreak )
In the words of Meer Taqui Meer, there is no respite from sorrow:
Gham raha jab tak ke dum meiN dum raha
dum ke jaane ka nihaayat Gham raha

Hafeez Jullunduri says :
zamaane bhar ke Gham, ya ik tera Gham
yeh Gham hoga tau kitne Gham na honge
(the griefs of the world or the sorrow you gave me
this one sorrow outweighs so many others...)
This concept of sorrow in traditional Urdu poetry will form the central idea of the talk.
