Corporate Education: Students' Suicides

The education system in India today is appalling. In the last few years higher education has become a costly affair. This made higher education a distant dream for the students under the poverty line and students of the middle class families are taking loans to provide education to their children. There has been a considerable decrease in number of free seats in public and private universities because of this the competition is at all time high. This competition has become the breeding ground for ruthless coaching institutions which are costly and have a 16 hour long schedule in a day along with weekly exams. This environment of constant pressure, lack of physical activity and guilt has lead to the sharp increase in mental health problems among students especially depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. In a span of 2 months in 2017 , 47 students commited suicide in Telangana and Andhra pradesh and around 18 students go missing every year.

There is neither any investigation on these suicides nor any attempt by the state & central government to prevent these suicides. While many suggest and believe that eliminating corporate education, reinstalling efficient public education is the solution. The political parties funded by these corporate private institutions aren't leaning in to change anything.
